6th grade art students created these positive and negative space animals. First students learned about what positive and negative space is. (Positive space is the space the subject of your picture occupies and the negative space is the space around the subject of the image.) Next students chose an animal and drew the outline of that animal onto two pieces of paper. In one picture students colored the positive space black and in the other picture they colored the negative space black. Then students learned about rhythm in art and how rhythm is created by repeating lines and shapes. Students added rythem with repeating lines and shapes to the positive space in one drawing and the negative space in the other.
