6th grade students learned about observational drawing by looking at a still life and drawing the outline of the objects that were set up for them. Then they painted the negative space with watercolor and created different values within their negative space.
Sixth grade students learned about the elements. They used one of the elements to design each section of their projects. The elements of art are line, shape, color, space, form, texture and value. The elements of art are considered the building blocks of art and all artists use a least a few of them each time they create an artwork. Which elements do you think are the most important for an artist to master?
6th Grade students learned about the proportions of the face for this project. Proportions are approximations but are good reference for drawing portraits. Students learn the correct shapes and placement of the features of the face. Then they look closely in the mirror at their own face to see if these proportions are true. Great job artists!
6th grade art students created these positive and negative space animals. First students learned about what positive and negative space is. (Positive space is the space the subject of your picture occupies and the negative space is the space around the subject of the image.) Next students chose an animal and drew the outline of that animal onto two pieces of paper. In one picture students colored the positive space black and in the other picture they colored the negative space black. Then students learned about rhythm in art and how rhythm is created by repeating lines and shapes. Students added rythem with repeating lines and shapes to the positive space in one drawing and the negative space in the other.
Sixth grade art students learned about contour lines for this project. Contour lines include not only the outlines, but also the important definition lines that lay within the outline.
Sixth grade students created these Silhouette and Symbol Self-Portrait.
In art, a symbol is usually a recognizable thing (an animal, a plant, an object, a logo, a word…) that stands for something else.
Within these silhouettes students created at least six symbols to represent themselves. They learned about composition (how objects are aranged within the picture plane) and they created interesting compositions by using repition and a variety of sizes of their symbols.
Sorry for the lack of art from the Middle School recently. I have been on maternity leave with my sweet Kai for the past few weeks, but we have great stuff going on in the art room. Sixth grade is currently working on a contour line project and just before I left we finished symbolic self-portraits. Eighth grade students are now working on a Mandala project and did lot of great projects with Mrs. Brahm. Stay tuned for lots of good things to come!
Art club is back for the 2013-2014 school year. We started off October with some great projects in art club and I love the way these hand drawigns turned out. Great job art club!
Ceramics class is off to a great start this year. Creating these clay birds is our third project of the year. Students used what they learned about making pinch pots and attaching details to make these birds. In the photo to the left they need to dry, go into the kiln and be glazed. The photos below are the finished project. I love how they each have their own personality. Great job done by all ceramics students!
