Studio Art students learned how to draw by actually seeing what was in front of them. The first step was to do blind contour drawings. Each student looked at an object and slowly drew it on the paper, without looking at the paper, and only drawing the outlines of what they saw; no shading. Next, they redrew the same object but this time they could look at the object and the paper as they were drawing the object. After this they did two contour drawing projects. The first project was to create five contour hand drawings with a decorative background. The second project was to create five contour drawings of everyday objects. The objects needed to be large enough to touch, overlap, and go off the paper; creating five, or more, negative space shapes. Once the objects were drawn and outlined with black marker each of the negative shapes were colored in creating emphasis on the objects.
