Students learned about the artist Henri Matisse and how later in his career he became ill so he started creating art by “painting with scissors.” They also learned about how to create composition in art and applied this to their art folders. They used scissors and paper to create four layers. The first layer was cutting geometric shapes for the background; the second layer was cutting smaller geometric andorganic shapes; the third layer was creating personable images by cutting paper; and the fourth layer was cutting out the letters in their name/nickname.
Digital Photography and Advanced DP Class time has been busy going through the rules and procedures, learning about the parts of our cameras, starting to learn the basics of Photoshop, and getting outside to take pictures. Everyone is doing a great job and seems to be really enjoying themselves. The students are eager to keep learning more about what their cameras are capable of and about all the cool things they can do in Photoshop. Please take a look at the slideshow to see us in action and to see projects we've been creating in Photoshop.
Studio Art The first week of Studio Art class we were busy getting to know each other and going over rules and procedures. Now that we have that behind us we are on our way to creating and learning about art. We created sketchbooks where we designed our own covers with our names, take a look at through the slideshow. We've already started learning about the artist Henri Matisse and learned how to critique some of his art work. This week we will be using Matisse's technique of "painting with scissors" to design a paper collage with our name and shapes on our art folders.
Hope everyone has had as nice a summer as I have. My mother told me many years ago to become a teacher because it is the best job to have as a parent and she was right. I was able to spend the summer doing everything I love with my children (my husband is not a teacher so he wasn't able to be with us as much as we would have liked). We traveled, visited family and friends, went to water and amusement parks, read, went to the movies, went to the races in Saratoga, rested, took a lot of pictures and had fun experimenting with my cameras, started my own sketchbook, and researched a lot on Pinterest to get ready for a new, fun, exciting, and creative new school year.
This year I will be updating my art blog every two weeks so please check back periodically to see what we are doing in the highschool art department.
Below I have created a slideshow of some of my most favorite photographs of the summer, along with the one to the left of my children overlooking Lake Eskatasius, Maine. Please take a peek and enjoy!

Advanced Photography students have been taking their self portraits and exploring what truly amazing things that Photoshop can do to create truly mesmerizing effects. KEEP WATCH because there are many more images to come!
Digital Photography class has been learning about taking portraits and self portraits. They have also been working a lot in Photoshop and are now creating Surreal images using two of their own photographs along with the internet. Next they are working on "Word" photography, spring themed photographs, and a career in photography research assignment.
In Studio Art class the students have been learning about the elements of value and color in art. Each student has been been practicing to create smooth, gradated values to create three dimensional shapes, in a comical way. They also learned about color theory and applied one theory to create watercolor trees with a personal touch. Next the students are on to the element of texture where they will apply all the elements of art (line, shape, form, value, color and texture) to create a still life drawing.
In Studio Art class the students have been busy creating their own custom shoes. We have been introduced to the element of from and are creating three dimensional shoes out of paper. Using the internet we looked at top shoe desiginers and local designers. We looked at Logo's and what the important factors are in making and creating our own logo. Next, it was on to using lines, shapes, and colors to design our shoes. Constructing our shoes needs A LOT of patience but we are trying our best to create an original and creative end product.
